Perhaps it is due to my age (this year I turned 60), but it seems I am developing a different perspective and appreciation for how I fit in the scheme of this existence. Not long ago, I overheard my daughter, Joy, describe me as "crunchy" to her friends. I had never heard the term before, but according to the Urban Dictionary, the term "crunchy" is used as an adjective to "describe persons who have adjusted or altered their lifestyle for environmental reasons. Crunchy persons tend to be politically strongly left-leaning and may be additionally but not exclusively categorized as vegetarians, vegans, eco-tarians, conservationists, environmentalist, neo-hippies, tree huggers, nature enthusiasts, etc." I have never at all identified with any of the above labels (unless you count the 6 or so weeks I was "vegan" after watching the documentary, Forks Over Knives, early last year), but I must admit I have gradually altered my lifestyle in the past year or so with a more conscious attempt to recycle, reuse and up-cycle. For example, I now diligently "recycle" kitchen scraps including egg shells and used dashi konbu for the garden, hoping the scraps will provide nutrients otherwise lacking in our "clay" soil. And rather than throwing out the bottoms (with roots) of the unused portion of the green onion, I now plant them to grow more. Yes, I do get some strange looks at times. However, knowing my actions benefit our soil and makes the most of existing plants is very gratifying.
It is with this "crunchy" frame of mind, along with my love to try my hand at various arts that lead me to Dharma Trading (a reputable online source for cotton dyeables, dyes and instructions) to create shibori tie-dyed furoshiki. Now we are able to offer the ultimate reusable bag in the form of the furoshiki. Our furoshiki are available in three sizes to wrap and carry a variety of shapes and sizes such as gifts, books, potluck dishes, groceries and more.
May we some day return to a lifestyle without the so-called convenience of the disposable plastic bag.
